Since the Radiation Control for Health \u0026amp; Safety Act of 1968 and the 1976 Medical Device Amendments to the FDA Act became effective, all manufacturers of diagnostic Doppler ultrasound equipment are required to submit information regarding their maximum peak and average exposure level, beam patterns and other pertinent information. Hospitals are responsible for regularly scheduled testing (every six months) of output power and safety to maintain their accreditation. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: small; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: black; font-size: small; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"\u003eThe Ultrasound Wattmeter, Model USP-100SP, is designed to measure the ultrasound power output of diagnostic or therapeutic transducers up to 30 watts. The principle of measurement is the radiant force method. The USP-100SP uses a positioning clamp to hold the transducer in de-gassed water above a conical target. The ultrasonic energy passes through the water to reflect off the target and is then absorbed by the rubber lining. The radiant power is directly proportional to the total downward force (weight) on the target. This weight is then transferred through the target support assembly to the electromechanical load cell inside the scale. The cell is in a computer-controlled feedback loop and produces a digital readout in watts of power (custom units) or grams of force. The choice of units (grams or watts) is selected by front panel pushbuttons. The USP-100SP is supplied with a plug-in 120 VAC to 12VDC 400 mA adapter (using another adapter not rated the same may damage unit). The USP-30 consists of a precision mechanical balance that measures from 0.15 to 30 Watts, a conical target suspended on a triangular hanger, a water tank, a transducer support rod with clamp and a carrying case. The transducer to be tested is center-mounted over the conical target with the transducer's radiating area immersed facedown in the water medium. The Model USP-30 Ultrasound Power Motor measures the average ultrasonic power by measuring the radiant force exerted by the transducer on the conical target. This target is coupled to the precision mechanical balance that is used to measure the gram-mechanical force due to the ultrasonic radiation. The gram force is directly proportional to the ultrasound power in watts when multiplied by a constant of 14.65. Therefore, a 2.05 gram force would be equal to 30 watts of ultrasound radiation. The heart of the USP-30 system is its air-filled conical target. The weight of this target is nulled to a minimum by using its own buoyancy. Incident ultrasound energy is mechanically transferred from the target to the precision balance where it is manually measured. Butyl rubber walls inside the water test tank absorb reflected ultrasound energy. The transducer to be tested is centered above a 45° air-backed cone target in de-gassed water. The coupling is made to a precision balance capable of resolving ± 0.15 watts. When acoustic energy is applied to the cone, the resultant force is directly proportional to the total radiated power. The test tank is lined with sonic absorbent rubber to prevent acoustic reflection. The balance is programmed to convert milligram magnitude forces direct to a readout in watts with good resolution.
